Internships

We work with interns from several local and regional colleges and universities, offering hands-on experience at Safe Berks. In an effort to make this a mutually beneficial experience for both our interns, the individuals that we serve, and Safe Berks, we require that all interns outline their internship goals and objectives as an attachment to the application. The majority of colleges and universities have specific requirements that must be met in order for the student to receive appropriate credit for an internship experience. The guidelines and evaluation form should be included with your application, so that we can determine whether or not we can structure the internship experience to meet your educational requirements.

We require that Safe Berks 66-hour educational seminar be completed before an internship can occur; therefore, we recommend planning six to twelve months in advance. Our spring 63-Hour seminar is held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 AM until Noon; starting date is usually the second week of March. The fall 66-Hour seminar is held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, usually beginning the first full week of September. We are limited by our space to 20 people per class.

Additionally, we will contact the prospective intern’s faculty advisor to determine what is required for the internship and ensure that all academic components can be met. There may be times, for a variety of reasons, that BWIC is unable to offer an internship experience that meets your objectives and requirements.

Our staff, specifically your Staff Supervisor and the Volunteer Coordinator, will work with you to outline your “intern/job description” to meet your academic objectives. If at any time you believe that you are not meeting your educational requirements, please discuss this with your Staff Supervisor. It is each intern’s responsibility to manage their own experience; if satisfaction is not achieved by talking with your Staff Supervisor, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to assist you.

Safe Berks has been very fortunate to have many wonderful interns who made a significant positive impact on our clients, Safe Berks staff, and the agency. Many interns have joined Safe Berks staff following an internship or graduation. Thank you for your interest in an internship at Safe Berks.
